Learning
At Duranbah Public School, we follow the NSW curriculum and provide a wide range of subjects to support the learning journey of every student. We understand that developing skills in literacy and numeracy is fundamental not only for academic success but also for everyday life. Our dedicated teachers use proven and effective teaching strategies to help each student reach their individual goals and thrive in their learning.
In addition to our core curriculum, we offer a variety of extracurricular activities that enrich student experiences and foster a well-rounded education. These include an AUSLAN choir, where students can learn and use Australian Sign Language in a musical setting. Our sustainability program is a key part of our school community, with students actively involved in maintaining a garden, growing produce, and caring for chickens. We also provide opportunities for students to engage in music, further nurturing their creativity and passion. Through these activities, we aim to support the development of diverse skills and interests beyond the classroom.

What students learn
Students learn a wide range of subjects in the NSW curriculum. They build skills, think creatively and prepare for life beyond school.
At our school, students have the option to participate in Special Religious Education (SRE) classes, which are conducted by approved providers. Upon enrolment, parents or guardians may select from the approved SRE providers available at the school. Students who do not attend SRE will be engaged in supervised alternative meaningful activities. This choice can be changed at any time by providing written notification or by using the online form if it is available at the school. Please be advised that there are no approved providers for Special Education in Ethics at this school. For more information, please visit the NSW Department of Education website or contact the school directly.

At our school, we give the right support to help gifted learners to grow and do their best.
We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.

Our learning approach
At Duranbah Public School, we use explicit teaching. This means we clearly explain to our students what they are learning, why it matters, and how to master each skill step by step. By breaking new ideas into smaller, manageable parts, explicit teaching helps our students build strong understanding and confidence.
Learning at Duranbah Public School is student-centred, inclusive, and practical. We are committed to ensuring equity and access for all students. We support diverse learning styles and individual needs to help every child succeed. Our teachers employ proven teaching strategies and regularly engage in professional development to stay current with the best teaching practices.
Our learning approach includes:
- real-world learning: hands-on tasks, group work and exploring new ideas
- technology: to help students learn and build digital skills
- flexible teaching: the right support for each student, with a focus on wellbeing
- community connections: through excursions and local programs.
